Ten islands 570 km off Senegal, and the reason every forecaster in the Atlantic knows the name: the easterly waves that leave this coast in August and September are the seeds of the Cape Verde hurricanes, the long-track storms that become the season's strongest. The islands themselves are dry — the same subsidence that makes them a launching pad keeps them arid, with Sal and Boa Vista under 100 mm a year — while Santo Antão and Fogo lift the trade wind high enough to wring several hundred millimetres out of it on their windward slopes. Hurricane Fred in 2015 was the first hurricane to make landfall on the archipelago in recorded history.
