The three models

GEM15 km

Environment and Climate Change Canada

The Canadian global model, and the member Canada contributes to the multi-model ensembles everyone else reads.

RENDERED BY FORECASTCANADA.COM

GFS13 km

NOAA / NCEP

The American global model — public domain, four cycles a day, and the guidance most national services on this continent actually run on.

RENDERED BY FORECASTEAGLE.COM

ECMWF HRES0.1°

European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts

The most skilful global deterministic model in the world by most scores, and the one the others are measured against.

How to read this page

Switching model holds the instant, not the forecast hour. The three centres run on different cycles, so +40 h on one is rarely +40 h on another. This page keeps the valid time across every switch and tells you when the nearest frame it could find is a few minutes off — because a frame an hour away is a weaker comparison than a simultaneous pair, and you should know which you are looking at.

The colours are not comparable between models. The values are. Each centre renders on its own palette over its own range — GFS spans about −62 to 54 °C in 128 steps, GEM −75 to 45, ECMWF −25 to 41 in 33 discrete bands. The same colour means three different things, so the legend is redrawn every time you switch. To actually compare, click the map: all three are probed at that point, at the same instant, and printed in one unit system.

A field one centre does not publish stays in the menu, greyed. GFS has no gust or pressure here; only ECMWF carries cloud cover and CAPE. What each centre publishes is worth knowing, and a menu that changes length under your hand is not.

Nothing on this page is hosted here. The frames are fetched straight from forecastcanada.com, forecasteagle.com and forecasteuro.com, which render and publish them. This site runs no model ingest and stores no model imagery.
