What the weather here is
Réunion holds the world records for rainfall at 12 hours, 24 hours, 72 hours and several intervals beyond — 1,825 mm in a day at Foc-Foc during Cyclone Denise in 1966, and over 6,000 mm in a fortnight during Cyclone Hyacinthe in 1980. The mechanism is a 3,070 m volcanic cone standing alone in the trade winds: a slow-moving cyclone parked upwind of that terrain becomes an unlimited orographic pump. Piton de la Fournaise is one of the most active volcanoes on Earth, the Cirques hold their own microclimates, and the island hosts RSMC La Réunion — the WMO centre responsible for naming and warning on every tropical cyclone in the southwest Indian Ocean, which is the basin authority for this entire coast.
