What the weather here is
Lake Malawi is 570 km long and 700 m deep and it moderates everything near it, but the local term worth knowing is the chiperoni — a cool, damp southeasterly drizzle that comes over the highlands from the Mozambique side in the dry season and can hold the Shire Highlands overcast for days at a time. The wet season runs November to April with 800 to 1,600 mm depending on altitude, and Malawi's exposure to Mozambique Channel cyclones is real and rising: Freddy in 2023 stalled over the south of the country and killed more than a thousand people in landslides and floods around Blantyre.
