Harare sits at 1,490 m, which is why a city at 17°S has an average high in the low 20s and cool nights from May to August. The country's rain comes almost entirely between November and March from the ITCZ and the Congo air boundary, and the Eastern Highlands around Nyanga take over 1,500 mm while the Limpopo lowveld takes under 450 mm and is genuinely hot. Zimbabwe is one of the most El Niño-sensitive countries on the continent — the 1991–92, 2015–16 and 2023–24 events each produced a national maize failure — and Kariba's output falls with the same signal.
