Twenty-five hundred kilometres of coast facing directly into the Mozambique Channel, which is one of the most productive tropical cyclone corridors in the Southern Hemisphere. Idai in 2019 came ashore at Beira and is among the deadliest storms ever recorded in the hemisphere; Kenneth made landfall six weeks later further north, the first time two systems of that strength had hit the country in one season; Freddy in 2023 crossed the channel twice. Away from the coast the country runs from 1,200 mm in the wet north to under 600 mm in the semi-arid Limpopo south, and the Zambezi delivers a flood whose timing is set by rain in Zambia and Angola.
