Somalia has the longest coastline in mainland Africa and one of the driest, and the reason is a piece of atmospheric dynamics: the Somali Jet, the low-level southwesterly that screams up this coast in boreal summer, runs parallel to the shore rather than onto it and drives coastal upwelling that cools the sea and kills convection. So the monsoon that soaks India passes Somalia and leaves it arid. What rain there is comes in two short seasons — the gu from April and the deyr from October — and consecutive failures of those are what produced the famines of 2011 and the 2020–23 drought. The northern highlands behind Berbera are cooler and wetter; Berbera itself regularly exceeds 45 °C.
