What the weather here is

Kenya's calendar is built on two seasons — the long rains from March to May and the short rains from October to December — and the short rains are unusually predictable, because they respond strongly to the Indian Ocean Dipole. A positive dipole means a warm western Indian Ocean and floods in Kenya; a negative one means drought, and that link is the basis of ICPAC's seasonal forecasts in Nairobi. Altitude does the rest: Nairobi at 1,795 m is 12 to 26 °C year-round on the equator, Mombasa at sea level is hot and humid, Mount Kenya carries glaciers that are nearly gone, and the Turkana corridor channels a low-level jet that makes the northwest both very dry and very windy — which is why Africa's largest wind farm is there.

Where the official forecast is

This site is not a warning service. The official forecast and every watch and warning for Kenya comes from Kenya Meteorological Department.

What is on this page is the raw observation — the METAR itself, from the aerodrome named above it — with nothing added and nothing forecast.
