Brazzaville and Kinshasa face each other across the Congo and share a climate that is odd for 4°S: a genuine dry season from June to September during which it can go weeks without rain, imposed by the same Benguela-driven stability that dries Gabon's coast. North of the equator the Cuvette Congolaise is permanently wet swamp forest with no real break at all, and the transition between the two happens over about 300 km. Annual totals run 1,200 to 2,000 mm, and the river's own flow is remarkably steady because its two hemispheres' wet seasons alternate.
