The numbers
What the weather here is
A coastal strip and then nothing: over 90% desert, with the only reliable rain on the Jebel Akhdar behind Benghazi, which takes around 500 mm and is green enough to be called the green mountain. The ghibli is Libya's own name for the searing southerly that arrives ahead of a Mediterranean low, and it is why Al Aziziyah held the world temperature record for 90 years before the WMO threw the reading out in 2012. In September 2023 Storm Daniel — a medicane, a Mediterranean system with tropical structure — put a year of rain on the Jebel in a day, burst two dams above Derna and killed thousands. That is the tail risk on this coast.
Where the official forecast is
This site is not a warning service. The official forecast and every watch and warning for Libya comes from National Meteorological Centre.
What is on this page is the raw observation — the METAR itself, from the aerodrome named above it — with nothing added and nothing forecast.
