Algiers

Africa's largest country by area, and about 85% of it is Sahara. The habitable part is the Tell — a Mediterranean strip that takes 600 to 1,000 mm of winter rain on the seaward slopes of the Tell Atlas — and behind that the High Plateaus run semi-arid and cold in winter, with snow at Batna and Djelfa most years. South of the Saharan Atlas the rain stops: In Salah averages under 15 mm a year and 45 °C in July. Algeria is also where the Saharan heat low sits in summer, and that low is the engine that pulls the monsoon north across West Africa.
