What the weather here is

South Africa has three capitals and at least as many climates. The southwestern Cape is Mediterranean — Cape Town takes its rain from cold fronts between May and August and its summer is dry, scoured by the southeasterly Cape Doctor — while everything east and north of the escarpment is summer-rainfall, from Johannesburg's 700 mm of highveld thunderstorms to Durban's humid subtropical 1,000 mm on the warm Agulhas coast. Between them lies the Karoo, semi-arid and extreme in both directions. The Drakensberg gets real snow, cut-off lows produce the country's worst floods — Durban in April 2022 took over 300 mm in a day and lost more than 400 people — and the 2015–18 Cape drought came within weeks of a major city running out of water.

Where the official forecast is

This site is not a warning service. The official forecast and every watch and warning for South Africa comes from SAWS — South African Weather Service. During a tropical cyclone the advisory that everything else follows is RSMC La Réunion’s, which is the WMO centre for the southwest Indian Ocean.

What is on this page is the raw observation — the METAR itself, from the aerodrome named above it — with nothing added and nothing forecast.
